"A STUDENT IS NOT ABOVE HIS TEACHER"

July 6, 01

MT 10:24 "A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. [25] It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master.

JN 14:9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'? [10] Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. [11] Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. [12] I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. [13] And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. [14] You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

I just finished watching "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and considered some of the parallel truths found in scripture there. This is seen in how many of these warriors had MASTERS whom had taught them their secrets concerning how to battle and discipline one痴 mind. Even though this is represented in an "eastern setting," and one, which would normally, be predominately Buddhist in essence, these things are not emphasized, or even recognized. In the early 19th century, martial arts wizard Li Mu Bai, has decided to part with his sword. It is a legendary 400-year-old blade known as Green Destiny. Li Mu Bai has entrusted the sword to an old friend, and is inclined to get back at the one who killed his MASTER, some years ago. He was killed by the devious criminal Jade Fox. Li now seems more inclined to a meditative life and entrusts the sword to Yu Shu Lien , a close friend and warrior, and one in whom he has experienced a mutual, long-suppressed love.

Delivering the sword to Beijing, Shu Lien meets Jen (Zhang Ziyi), a small, and stubborn politician's daughter who is desperately unhappy over being forced into an arranged marriage. This has only increased the envy she feels over the freewheeling lifestyle she imagines is enjoyed by the older woman. After many incredible sword scenes and duels, Green Destiny is stolen, triggering many things that are yet to come. Li Mu Bai had always wanted a disciple, one whom he could impart the things he had learned through his many years of discipline. However, the young Jen didn稚 want this, she had decided that she somehow had everything that she needed and more. No one would be her MASTER.

We know well about the accounts of how the disciples followed Jesus and learned from Him. He taught them many things concerning prayer, love, unity, and countless other things. Just being with Him, somehow gave them the courage and inspiration to follow in His footsteps. He continues to be our MASTER, and we His followers. And of course, that is what is meant by the word, disciple:

Disキciキple n. 1. a. One who embraces and assists in spreading the teachings of another. b. An active adherent, as of a movement or philosophy. 2. Often Disciple. One of the 12 original followers of Jesus. 3. Disciple. A member of the Disciples of Christ. 謀isキcipleキship n.

Jesus told us in Matt. 10:24: "A student is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. [25] It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. We should strive to be LIKE OUR MASTER. That does not mean that we will surpass him. It is true that we may do "greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. " But our character, our very life, will not be greater. It is enough to know that we will be "like Him," for in that way then, we will see Him as He truly is.

[2] Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. [3] Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure. I John 3:2

Remember to follow the MASTER, and learn from Him. He will teach us many things if we would but listen to Him. We will always be students no matter how long or how far we have come in our walk with Him.
